SEC proposes rules letting advisers and funds self-custody crypto

The SEC proposed a framework that would let investment advisers and regulated funds hold crypto directly — including self-custody where no permitted custodian exists — with a 60-day comment period.

State trust companies would also qualify as custodians under the proposal.

Chairman Paul Atkins: “Our rules and regulations have not kept pace.”

Commissioner Hester Peirce urged regulators to “zealously protect investors’ right to self-custody.”
