Aave cut the utilization threshold for USDT borrowing on its Ethereum Core market from 94% to 92%, so costs rise sooner as liquidity tightens.
Key points
- Aave cut the USDT kink on Ethereum Core from 94% to 92%, executed Oct. 21, 2026.
- At 94% utilization the borrow rate is 7% APR, versus 4.5% under the old curve, per CryptoSlate.
- LlamaRisk says the kink buffer rises from 173.5M to 231.4M USDT.
- On Oct. 23 utilization was about 86.45% with a borrow rate near 4.23%.
Aave lowered the utilization threshold at which USDT borrowing costs climb sharply on its Ethereum Core market, moving it from 94% to 92%. According to CryptoSlate, the change was executed on October 21, 2026, in Ethereum block 26,241,799.
Borrowing above the threshold is still permitted. The rate simply rises more steeply once the pool crosses it, which means loans get more expensive earlier as available cash shrinks.
What the USDT rate change does
Aave sets variable borrow rates along a utilization curve, with a “kink” where the slope steepens. CryptoSlate reported the following parameters at an October 23 block: 92% optimal utilization, a 0% base rate, a 4.5% first slope and a 10% second slope. That puts the borrow rate at 4.5% at the kink and 14.5% at full utilization.
At 94% utilization, CryptoSlate said, the rate is 7% APR under the new curve, compared with 4.5% under the old one. For a hypothetical 1 million USDT loan held for a year, a 2.5-point gap would equal about 25,000 USDT in extra simple interest, the outlet said. That is an illustration, not an observed cost.
The headline effect depends on where utilization sits. In the governance post by risk provider LlamaRisk, dated October 20, 85.6% utilization would move the variable borrow rate only from 4.10% to 4.19% APR. The supply rate would move from 3.16% to 3.22%. The borrow rate at the kink stays at 4.50%.
Why Aave made the change
LlamaRisk, a risk service provider funded in part by the Aave DAO, said lowering the optimal point “converts borrow capacity into exit liquidity.” By its figures, the cash buffer at the kink rises from 173.5 million USDT to 231.4 million USDT. Borrow headroom up to the kink falls from 243.5 million to 185.7 million USDT. The post says the change would be implemented through the Risk Steward process. CryptoSlate cited the same recommendation, which reported 2,892.2 million USDT supplied.
The post gave the base rate and both slopes as unchanged.
What the change does not do
CryptoSlate stressed that the lower threshold does not add cash to the pool. Suppliers can withdraw only against unborrowed liquidity, so exits still depend on how much USDT is sitting in the pool. The outlet said it could not establish a causal link between the rate change and later deposits or withdrawals.
Its October 23 snapshot, taken at block 26,254,517, showed:
- About 2.888 billion USDT in total supply
- About 2.497 billion USDT in variable debt
- About 391.4 million USDT in available cash
- Utilization of about 86.45%, below the new 92% threshold
- A variable borrow rate of about 4.23% APR and a supplier rate of 3.29%
At that reading, borrowers were not yet paying the higher slope. Rates would rise noticeably only if utilization approaches the kink. Data cited elsewhere showed the pool running close to that zone earlier this month: one report put Ethereum USDT utilization at 93.74% on October 8.
